Republican refuse to increase taxes on the rich.?

I listen to the news everyday as I am retired and feel Americans should make an attempt to know what's going on?. I consider my self to be an independent but leaning toward the democratic side. Can some one please explain to me why republicans won't increase taxes on the rich and big business like oil companies who make billions of dollars in profits. It is totally illogical to me. At this time in our government, the 2 parties are so by-partisan that they are not working for us but for their own party. Why?How can republican think they will get re-elected ?
