My home air conditioner is icing up, what might be the cause?

If an AC is low on coolant it causes it to run longer and harder to cool. This extra time gives it a chance to freeze ice on the coils, and this causes an insulation on the coils which makes the unit keep running. An AC that runs properly will cut off from time to time giving it a chance for any ice to melt keeping the coils clean.
